Jon Stam
is an artist practice based in that distills the power of digital things and transforms them into meaningful material interactions. The studio is comprised of designer Jon Stam and hard- and software engineer Simon de Bakker. Their common works have been commissioned and showcased worldwide, in Dubai, Milan, at MUDAC Lausanne, during Manifesta at Sotheby's.
Frames The walls of Schloss Hollenegg hold many treasures, but perhaps the most spectacular treasure of all is how the castle’s walls frame the pastoral landscape. For ‘Legacy’, Commonplace Studio chose three viewing points from within the castle that look out upon the neighbouring woodlands, and set off to explore each area from a more intimate point of view. Adjacent to each outlook the studio designed new frames for the wall that depicts a scene deep within the forest. When one touches the frame, the static image becomes more enchanting as it moves slow and steady through the rich natural environment. When one lets go the moving image comes to a standstill, framing a new and ever changing portrait on the castle walls.
Lumière The Lumière pendant lamp appropriates contemporary cinema technology while paying homage to the pioneers of the medium. The double meaning of Lumière – referring to both the French word for light and the inventors who popularised modern cinema – reflects its dual function. Acting alone, each lamp lights up through the projection of moving images on the inner surface of the glass bulb. Acting in multiples they orchestrate into a cinematic spectacle.
